Subject: Baccarat Crystalworks first appeared in the early 19th century. However, it was not until the second half of the century when perfume making was revolutionized by blending natural essences with the new synthesized ingredients, that Baccarat perfume bottles blossomed into their period of greatest creativity and variety. At that time, Baccarat began to supply many of the major perfume houses. In subsequent years almost all major perfume houses sold fragrances in Baccarat flacons. Throughout its long history, perfume has always been a reflection of society. Thus, the civilizations that most valued individuality were those which created the greatest perfumes: ancient Greece, the Roman Empire, and following the Middle Ages’ disapproval of perfume, the Renaissance and the modern age. In 1986, the most important event for the collector was certainly March 3rd’s sale of 156 lots of perfume flacons in Paris. It was the first of its kind in Paris and probably worldwide. We find few historical documentation available; thanks to this publication some information will be released. Eight hundred and forty three bottles done by Baccarat crystal makers from 1889 to 1980 are presented with the help of documents pulled from archives and collection specimens at the Baccarat Museum in Paris.
